Død snø – DEAD SNOW – The Dungeon Review!

dead snow promoEven though there has been a glut of crappy zombie films over the last few years, I still can’t resist seeing every one that comes out. I’ve been psyched to see ‘Dead Snow’ since I read about it several months ago. Although it’s not the first film to use Nazi Zombies, it’s still a rare commodity. How can anyone say no to a zombie in uniform?!

A group of medical students taking a ski vacation in an isolated Norway town, have their good times cut short by a group of angry Nazi zombies.

The only real issue I had with ‘Dead Snow’ is it takes forever to get going! It is almost 40 minutes in before the action starts, with the exception of the brief opening chase scene. That is just too long! I couldn’t wait to see those Nazi Zombies! The main characters, along with their conversations, didn’t keep me interested enough. There is all sorts of references to other horror films, which I’m sure some will be able to appreciate, personally I’m neither here nor there with the loving tribute thing. There is some relevant background delivered about the Nazi’s by a cranky late night visitor, which is the most entertaining dialog in the films first half. The group also make a discovery which inevitably causes them considerable grief, particularly for one character. You’ll know what I mean at the end of the film. There is one conversation among the group regarding how to know whether to dig up or dig down that adds a great deal to a scene in the second half. Again, you’ll know what I mean when you see it. So, the first half is not completely chopped liver, they just should have cut it down. The second half however is nothing short of spectacular! When it gets going full gear it doesn’t let up right through to the final credits. So even though there was 40 minutes of chat it more than rewards with 40 + minutes of a high energy, full zombie assault complete with entrails, death by tree, ski-mobile, chainsaw, mallet and more. There is creative and bloody carnage that had me laughing and cheering. I am dying to tell you about some of the crazy carnage, but it would really take away the fun! Watch out for a scene I like to call “Make A Wish” and tell me that isn’t more fun then a barrel of freaking monkeys! I am absolutely in love with the zombie make-up and the uniforms and the effects are top notch. There is a nice isolated snowy expanse of trees and hills and nothingness. I love how it is beautiful and peaceful for a few moments and then the silence is broken by angry Nazi zombies. It is all nicely tied up with a fantastic ending! Love that ending! In case you didn’t figure it out from the films promo poster, ‘Dead Snow’ is a horror-comedy. The film has some decent tension during chase sequences but I wouldn’t say the film is out to scare you, just make you laugh and gross you out. The premise is not without its holes but it’s a movie about Nazi zombies, just sit back and enjoy the ride! This is easily one of the best zombie films to come out in a while, only slightly marred by a pokey start. Highly recommended!
