“My (musical) world is a little bit dark… a little bit off-center. I think of it as tragically beautiful. That is how I would describe what I love best: tragically beautiful.” Quote taken from Wikipedia’s Angelo Badalamenti page.
Angelo Badalamenti’s first film score credit was Gordon’s War (1973) under the pseudonym Andy Badale. His first Angelo Badalamenti credit was for David Lynch’s 1986 film Blue Velvet; he would go on to compose several more scores for Mr. Lynch. He composed for a handful of other 80s films including A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Tough Guys Don’t Dance (1987), Weeds (1987). Cousins (1989), Wait Until Spring Bandini (1989) and Christmas Vacation (1989). Badalamenti really hit his stride in the 90s however with this impressive list from the decade’s television and film:

I am madly in love with Angelo Badalamenti’s collaborations with David Lynch. I have posted several tracks featuring Badalamenti’s Lynch work on my YouTube channel. I was obsessed with Twin Peaks and its wonderfully eccentric characters. I can’t imagine better accompaniment than Badalamenti’s beautiful haunting score. Badalamenti so perfectly captures the menace, the mayhem, the quirkiness, the sadness, the seduction and the richness of Lynch’s stories. Here are a couple of the Twin Peaks tracks I’ve posted on YouTube…
A good score is so important to the feel of a film. When the composer shares a singular vision with the film maker it is magic. Badalamenti’s Lynch work is extra special music to my ears, but those are not the only outstanding scores he has created. Particularly solid was his work for Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 2004 film A Very Long Engagement and Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 1995 film The City of Lost Children. I have actually not seen A Very Long Engagement, but it is in my queue to watch after 90s month. I have however heard the soundtrack and look forward to experiencing Badalamenti’s lovely music and Jeunet’s images come together. Here is a YouTube track I posted with music and images from The City of Lost Children…
Badalamenti was a busy man right through the 2000s scoring films like The Beach, Mulholland Dr., Auto Focus, Cabin Fever and Before the War to name just a few. Angelo Badalamenti is currently scoring two films listed as being in post-production Stalingrad and The Wait. I am going to leave you with one more piece of Badalamenti; Music and images from David Lynch’s Brilliant 1990 film Wild At Heart. Dark Spanish Symphony composed by Angelo Badalamenti…
