DOGHOUSE – The Dungeon Review!

doghouse 3I really enjoyed Jake West’s Evil Aliens, there is a nasty anal probe within the first 3 minutes and plenty of other splendid moments. Switch Blade Smile is a vampire film with an intriguing female lead and some truly unique moments (think menstruation). So I was pretty pleased to see something new from West. You can turn your brain on autopilot for this one. I’m not suggesting that is a bad thing. This horror-comedy is actually quite entertaining.

A guys getaway weekend goes bad when they discover their destination is infested with men-hating female zombies.

What you’ve got here is a British horror-comedy with angry man-hating female zombies. It is highly slapstick and is stuffed to the gills with one-liners and site gags, gory and otherwise. It is definitely NOT about story! In fact, you could rip this film a new one, if you really wanted to break it down. Honestly! What kind of town was this anyway? The women most decidedly do not look like the residence of your run-of-the-mill tiny hamlet. The zombie women are extremely twitchy and have great difficulty getting about, but they sure do seem to have excellent manipulation of their upper body’s! There is a Zena looking zombie, with an enormous rack that sure could whip a sword about and a hairdresser that could manipulate two pairs of scissors like Edward Scissorhands! Doghouse pretty much offers you the typical explanation for zombie-related outbreaks, but as I mentioned earlier, it’s not about story. It is all about the visuals! The make-up and effects in this film are outstanding! There is a potpourri of professions represented. There’s a butcher, a housewife, a bride, a dental surgeon, the aforementioned hairdresser and Zena, just to name a few. I honestly cannot recall a zombie film where revealing wardrobe and boobs were so relevant. It doesn’t take long for the action to start and when it does it goes full-throttle without a second of downtime. People and zombies die in a variety of creative, gory and hilarious ways.

The films title derives from the various male characters personal situations. The film opens up with several of the men having arguments with their significant others. Then of course, the whole purpose of the weekend is to cheer up one of the friends who is going through a divorce. The guys self-proclaimed men’s weekend has the piss taken out of it pretty quick by this group of flesh-eating dames. There is no attempt to scare though, only amuse, so even when the film has a darker moment it is quickly dashed out with humour. The film is mildly guilty of trying too hard with the laughs, most of the gags work perfectly, but there are others that do fall flat. I was digging the ending but the final few minutes did piss me off a bit. I’m not going to hold the last 5 minutes of the film against it. Doghouse is silly, gory, high-energy fun! If you enjoy a good site gag, great visuals, plenty of gore and politically incorrect humour in your zombie film, than check this one out!
