Goregirl’s Dungeon on YouTube: Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977 – 1988

In keeping with this month’s theme I wanted to post some Canadian music on my YouTube channel. 90% of the music on my channel is from soundtracks and I am ashamed to say I do not own a single soundtrack for a Canadian film. What other Canadian music would I want to highlight otherwise? It is a question that in a round about way got answered by Heather Drain. I have been reading Heather’s Weekly Mondo Roundup for the past few months which has inspired me to pull out some music I had not listened to in ages. Heather is a real champion for the music and movies I grew up with and a damn fine writer to boot. I can’t recommend more highly going to check out her cozy little nest! I started working in a record store in 1991. It was a time of my life I look back at with a huge fondness. Record store employees make a pretty shitty wage but fortunately the job comes with perks; free shows, listening parties and CDs. We went to see tons of bands back then! Of course every penny of my wage that did not cover life’s necessities went to buying music and movies in one way or another. There were so damn many amazing music venues in this city back in the day. The Town Pump, The Starfish Room, The Brickyard and Richards. All gone! Every last one of them! The only two still standing are The Railway Club and The Commodore Ballroom. It was a really sweet period in my life. The one CD in my collection that reminds me like no other of that time is the compilation Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977 – 1988. My friends and I played this CD to exhaustion! This is my rock and roll love letter to Heather Drain: Songs one through ten from the compilation Last Call: Vancouver Independent Music 1977 – 1988. I will be posting songs eleven through twenty on Monday.

The Furies — What Do You Want Me To Be

The Stiffs – Fuck You
The Generators — I Wanna Be A Girl
The Dishrags — I Don’t Love You

  1. I worked in retail so know all about those crappy wages, but working in a record store with all those “extras” sounds like a blast, and I’m glad you got to experience it! I’ve said it before, but MUST say again,to me,Goregirl, you are one of Canada’s greatest treasures! And remember,I’m elderly,so you must heed the words of your virtual amigo from that black hole of time and space known as Omaha! ๐Ÿ™‚ Rock on!

      • I now look like Marlin Perkins with less hair. I know I kinda, sorta knock Omaha from time to time, and I just want you to know…I MEAN EVERY WORD OF IT! ๐Ÿ˜‰ All the cool places that were here when I first arrived are gone. Think I’ll be heading to “parts unknown” next. ๐Ÿ™‚
