ALTERED – The Dungeon Review!

alteredThis is the second film from Sanchez, who directed ‘THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT’. I loved ‘BLAIR WITCH’. The morbid disappointment I felt after paying my hard earned dollars to see ‘Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2’ at the theatre soured me. The film wasn’t even directed by Sanchez! But I have to admit it erased him from my radar. What a shame too! ‘ALTERED’ is his follow up directorial debut, and it is an ass whooping good time!

Fifeteen years after being abducted by aliens, a trio of men manage to capture one of the creatures. The trio were part of a group of five youth, one of which never came back. The other abductee, who chooses to live in seclusion, becomes a reluctant host to his estranged friends and their hostage.

They actually go to the trouble of developing characters. One of the guys in the group is pretty hornery but actually has some legitimate reasons for being so. The group for the most part are actually pretty likeable blokes. The performances are well above par. There is definitely humour but it is just one of the ingredients in the recipe. This film has some great moments of intenstiy. It gets right into the action and then just builds and builds. The effects were great and the creative use of gore was inspired. You’ll marvel at the complete lack of CGI and bask in the glory of simplicity. The alien is a nasty little bastard and is rather spectacular. Loved those teeth! There is a scene involving entrails that was just freaking great! Sanchez throws as much goo and gore at you as the budget allows. There are instances that characters are walking about or fighting back when they should be quite dead. I didn’t think this was neccessarily a bad thing though. It does teeter on the edge of campy but the sitation is pretty outrageous so I didn’t think it hindered the film at all. There was one scene near the end I would have left on the cutting room floor but by no means should it stop you from seeing this film. This flick is a trip! I’m just sorry it took me so damn long to see it. I’ll be the first in line to see Sanchez’s next project! Highly recommended!

Dungeon Rating: 4/5

Directed By: Eduardo Sánchez

Starring: Misty Rosas, Paul McCarthy-Boyington, Brad William Henke, Michael C. Williams, Adam Kaufman, Catherine Mangan, James Gammon and Joe Unger

I didn’t realize both Blair Witch and this film were from the same guy. I saw this one some time ago but it must’ve been before I started the blog. I did enjoy it and I can recall some good moments of gore. I wish it was a little more fresh in my mind.

    Goregirl,

I really liked this one too. It was surprisingly effective for what I initially figured would be another spin in Witch territory. So far, Sanchez seems to be the more talented of the Blair Witch duo. I really liked the way this one wrapped up storywise–interesting ending and it echoed 50s B movies perfectly.

I saw his newest, Seventh Moon at the Maryland Film Festival and it’s as good or better than Altered IMHO. Met Sanchez as well, and he seems like a pretty cool laidback guy. You can read the review of it over here: http://cinematropolis.wordpress.com/2009/05/20/mff-review-seventh-moon-takes-terror-to-china/

Great score getting to see that one early! I watched the trailer for it recently and I thought it looked pretty promising. Noticed you had a review of DEAD SNOW also. I’m really looking forward to seeing that one too! Hope you don’t mind but I added you to the blogroll!
      Cheers, goregirl!
