Reality TV Bites – DEAD SET – The Dungeon Review!

dead-set-tv-logoMy intention was to watch only North American horror films this weekend. Instead I find myself singing the praises of yet another UK offering. This was originally a 5 part series shown on a British cable network. Never having seen the series, I don’t really know if this film is an epilogue or if they’ve turned the 5 part series into a feature length film. Either way, this entertaining flick stands on its own.

We start out in a film studio where they produce the reality show Big Brother. Meanwhile other stations are showing the latest news about the current unrest and violence in the streets. For a brief moment they actually consider canceling the evenings episode. But alas, the show must go on. A huge crowd of fans have shown up. Enter zombie outbreak. It spreads quickly through the hordes of people and into the station and in no time flat almost everyone is infected. One of the
few still breathing is the studio “runner” who manages to find her way to the Big Brother house. The participants of the show have no access to the outside world and have no idea of the horror that has been unleashed. Big Brother with Zombies is a reality show I could actually watch!

The pacing is dead on. There is never a dull moment. There is copious zombie violence and the effects are top notch. Lots of entrail eating and some really kick ass zombie makeup is sure to make gorehounds happy. The interaction between the characters is lively and actually quite watchable. The token asshole of the group plays it over the top but is nicely balanced out by more likeable characters. The performances are strong and the film quality overall is above par. I still don’t care for the fast zombies. It loses points for that. There are a couple scenes that seemed a bit too familiar. Granted, it can be difficult to stick to the basic zombie template and not seem repetitive. Although guilty of some borrowing, it definitely contributes enough of its own unique flavor to keep you entertained. This is one of the most action packed zombie films I have seen in some time. Highly Recommended!
